Supervisors: Dr. Sara Atito and Prof. Muhammad Awais

Affiliations: Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) and Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI (PAI)

Research focus: Foundation model reliability across vision language models (VLMs), video language models (VideoLMs), and multimodal clinical reasoning models, with an emphasis on evidence grounded reasoning, AI safety, alignment, and transparency in healthcare.

PhD project: Toward Reliable and Transparent Foundation Models for Domain-Specific Applications
Current foundation models, particularly large language models, still struggle with factual reliability, especially in specialized or high stakes domains. Although models such as GPT, LLaMA, Claude, and Gemini can generate fluent and convincing responses, they may still produce hallucinated or unsupported information. Hallucinations remain a challenge even in retrieval augmented generation (RAG) systems connected to external sources, as errors can occur during retrieval, reasoning, or generation. This creates a need for foundation models that can not only generate accurate responses, but also verify their outputs, express uncertainty, and provide traceable evidence for their claims. This research aims to improve the factual reliability and transparency of foundation models for domain specific applications, particularly in high stakes settings where incorrect outputs can have serious consequences.
